TOP PR DISASTERS OF 2006
According to The Age's Leon Gettler, there are plenty of contenders for the title of 'worst PR disaster of 2006', including:
- Kim Beazley referring to Rove McManus as Karl Rove, the name of President Bush's senior adviser, when he made a statement of sympathy to mark Belinda Emmett's funeral.
- Every girl's favourite, Sheik Hilali (re: meat and women).
- Mel Gibson for self-immolating with racist road rage.
- US vice-president Dick Cheney for shooting his friend in a hunting accident, then waiting the good part of a day before telling the media.
- Hewlett-Packard for spying on its directors.
- Michael "Kramer" Richards getting his racist taunts posted on YouTube.
- Eddie McGuire thinking he was at a Collingwood footy club function and cutting loose with talk about "boning" female talent? Or should we say the PR disaster that ensued when Nine took to the courts to keep secret the revelation about McGuire's tasteful comments.
- ABC spending $100,000 on Jonestown, the biography of Alan Jones, then dumping it because they got scared of Jones suing, and then watching as it turned into a runaway bestseller with publisher Allen and Unwin picking up all that publicity.
- Danny Devito turning up on a chat show looking wasted, and then claiming he was actually "groggy" after a wild night with George Clooney, not because he was drunk. Try and work that one out!
